Glossary
Acceleration due to gravity- Force of gravity and the acceleration generated on the objects due to this force.
Adherence- The quality of staying attached
Aesthetics- Concerned with beauty or appreciation of beauty
Analyze- To separate (a material or abstract entity) into constituent parts or elements; determine the elements or essential features of; to examine carefully
Balanced force- When two equal forces are pushing on an object from opposite directions
Brainstorming- a conference technique of solving specific problems, building up information, creatively thinking, developing new ideas, etc., by free and spontaneous participation in discussion.
Criteria- a standard of judgment or criticism; a rule or principle for evaluating or testing something.
Compatibility- Able to work well together and live in peace
Conservation of Momentum-
the principle that the total linear or angular momentum in any isolated system is constant, provided that no external force is applied
Conventional- conforming or adhering to accepted standards, as of conduct or taste:
Critical- inclined to find fault or to judge with severity, often too readily; vital
Design brief- a written plan for the specifics of a project
Design loop- The iterative process in which a GIS map is created, examined for design, improved, and then replotted from the modified map definition until the user is satisfied that a good design has been reached.
Durability- able to resist wear, decay, etc., well; lasting; enduring.
Engineering- the art or science of making practical application of the knowledge of pure sciences, as physics or chemistry, as in the construction of engines, bridges, buildings, mines, ships, and chemical plants.
Force- physical power or strength possessed by a living being
Formulate- to come up with
Free fall- the hypothetical fall of a body such that the only force acting upon it is that of gravity.
Friction- When two surfaces rub together
Fluid friction-Friction that occurs when fluids or gasses rub against each other
Functionality- Ability to work or operate
Gravity- the force of attraction by which terrestrial bodies tend to fall toward the center of the earth.
Idea- any conception existing in the mind as a result of mental understanding, awareness, or activity.
Implementation- the act of implementing, or putting into effect; fulfillment:
Inertia (Newton's First Law of Motion)- An object in motion stays in motion unless acted on by an unbalanced outside force; an object at rest stays at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced outside force.
Innovation- something new or different introduced:
Invention- a new, useful process, machine, improvement, etc., that did not exist previously and that is recognized as the product of some unique intuition or genius, as distinguished from ordinary mechanical skill or craftsmanship.
Iteration- Repeating
Logical reasoning- Reasoning and thinking that is based on logic and rationality
Momentum- force or speed of movement; impetus, as of a physical object or course of events:
Motion- the act, process, or result of moving.
Newton's Second Law of Motion (f=ma)- Force=mass x acceleration
Newton's Third Law of Motion (action/reaction)- For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
Observation- The action of watching something; to notice
Performance- the execution or accomplishment of work, acts, feats, etc.
Practical- adapted or designed for actual use; useful
Process- a systematic series of actions directed to some end
Prototype- the original or model on which something is based or formed.
Research- diligent and systematic inquiry or investigation into a subject in order to discover or revise facts, theories, applications, etc.
Rolling friction- frictional resistance to rotation or energy losses in rolling bearings
Sliding friction- frictional resistance to relative movement of surfaces on loaded contact
Solution- the act of solving a problem, question, etc.
Specification- a detailed description or assessment of requirements, dimensions, materials, etc., as of a proposed building, machine, bridge, etc.
Unbalanced force- A force that is not opposed by an equal force
velocity- speed in a given direction
